ROCHESTER — Almost 60 years ago, this upstate city finished digging a deep trench for a highway bypass, a lauded effort to help speed residents out of the central city and into its suburbs.
Today, Rochester is effectively burying that 20th-century devotion to vehicle efficiency and committing the old highway’s right of way to the city’s recovery.
Rochester is completing a $23.6 million project that fills in almost a third of the 2.7-mile sunken highway and replaces it with an at-grade boulevard and nearly six acres of prime land for development.
Though cities like Boston, San Francisco and New York have removed elevated and surface highways, decisions that cleared the way for housing and office construction, leaders here say Rochester may be first to fill in a section. The project fits the city’s effort to focus on pedestrians and establish vital neighborhoods for housing, expanding businesses and producing jobs.

Dunkin’ Donuts will host a grand opening April 2 at its new Brockport location, 4675 Lake Road.
To celebrate the grand opening, the restaurant will hold an event with food and beverage samplings, a raffle with prize giveaways and more. The location has been open since March 13.
The new restaurant is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day and will employ approximately 20 crewmembers. The restaurant features comfortable seating and also offers flat-screen televisions, free Wi-Fi, music and outdoor patio seating during the warmer months.
The new restaurant in Brockport serves a complete menu featuring hot and iced coffees, along with espresso, cappuccinos and lattes and its recently introduced macchiato. Dunkin’ Donuts also serves a full lineup of donuts, bakery goods and sandwiches, including its new GranDDe Burrito. All Dunkin’ Donuts menu items are available any time of day and guests are encouraged to customize their favorite food and beverages.
Indus Hospitality Group, the Dunkin’ Donuts’ franchisee for the new restaurant in Brockport, currently operates 20 Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants in Western New York.

Construction has started on a 3,000-square-foot Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in Canandaigua. The restaurant is adjacent to the Canandaigua lakefront and the Pinnacle North project, officials said.
The restaurant is slated to open in March. It is expected to employ some 25 workers.
Perinton-based based Indus Hospitality Group Inc. owns and operates the new restaurant and already owns the Farmington KFC franchise, officials said.

Indus Hospitality Group hosted a grand-opening celebration Oct. 21 for their new four-story, 77-room Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham on Elm Street in Penn Yan. Over 100 visitors enjoyed tours of the amenities, which include 18 suites, a pool, meeting space, and a fitness center. They also sampled a buffet of hors d’oeuvres, local wines and beers, and a special cake for the event.
